Sumea Awarded First Prize of £30,000 in the Hutchison 3G Java Competition Zoy's Rescue Mission, a mobile Java episode game developed by Finnish company Sumea, was the winner of the first Hutchison 3G award. 130 companies around the world were invited to compete in creating future 3G consumer and business applications. Zoy's Rescue Mission stunned the jury with its smooth animation and vivid graphics. In September 2002, Hutchison 3G (3) announced the competition to generate new Java ideas for the UK's first 3G handsets. The company wanted to see creative and original products that leverage the opportunities of 3G networks and Java-enabled mobile handsets. To lure competitors, a total of £60,000 worth of development money was reserved for successful entrants, of which £30,000 was set aside for the winner. The competition was a great opportunity for Sumea to show off its Java game development capabilities. The final product, Zoy's Rescue Mission, is a colourful tale of the Zoykids juniors who have crash-landed on Ice planet. The player must collect the juniors and escort them safely to a spacecraft. The full game consists of multiple episodes and is packed with distinctive features like interactive help. "Our mission is to deliver premium games for premium customers. The outcome of the competition proves that we are definitely on the right track. In the end, the success of 3G depends on valuable applications and services", explains Ilkka Paananen, CEO of Sumea.
